It’s been a fun and eventful year for us Zipwhippers. As we turn the corner and prepare to step into 2020, I wanted to take a look back at the most memorable events that shaped our company in 2019. Here are 10 of the biggest things that happened at Zipwhip this year.
1. Closed Series D funding round for $51.5 million
We closed a round of Series D funding for $51.5 million in January. Led by Goldman Sachs, with participation from current investors OpenView, M12 and Voyager Capital, this investment will continue to propel Zipwhip toward its goal to one day text-enable the more than 200 million business phone numbers in North America. 2. Released the first-ever State of Texting Report
We released our inaugural State of Texting Report—the first of its kind in the industry. Our team surveyed 2,000 businesses and consumers to get an in-depth look at how texting is used and viewed across various industries. Our report revealed consumer preferences for texting with businesses, texting response times and usage and how texting improves efficiency and strengthens customer relationships. Read more >
3. We won 23 awards!
While the work we do is its own reward, we were thrilled to accept awards from a group of highly respected organizations. Among the accolades we received, we were ranked 6th overall in Washington’s 100 Best Companies to Work For compiled by Seattle Business Magazine and named the sixth-best workplace in Washington by the Puget Sound Business Journal. 4. Big product enhancements
We view innovation as a never-ending journey fueled by our desire for improvement. In our ongoing effort to refine the customer experience and make Texting for Business faster and even more convenient, we released several product enhancements throughout the year; here are four that we’re particularly excited about: desktop app, 2.0 browser extension, embeddable texting widget for ClubReady and 600 character count increase for text messages.
5. CEO recognitions
In addition to the corporate awards we received, I was honored to be recognized for my individual contributions and leadership as a CEO and entrepreneur. I’m proud to have been selected as one of the Top 30 CEOs for women by Comparably, named one of the 100 Most Intriguing Entrepreneurs by Goldman Sachs and selected as a Finalist for Entrepreneur of the Year in the Pacific Northwest region by Ernst & Young.
6. Completed SOC 2 Type 1 examination
We successfully completed the Service Organization Control (SOC) 2 Type 1 examination, which demonstrates our commitment to the highest level of service and security excellence. Established by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), SOC 2 examinations are recognized as the gold standard for data security. The audit affirms that Zipwhip’s information security practices, policies, procedures and operations meet the SOC 2 standards for security. Read more >
7. Ninety-eight percent growth in message volume while fighting spam
The demand for business texting solutions continues to increase and Zipwhip is being elevated right along with it. We saw 98% growth in message volume compared to 2018. In conjunction with that, we blocked 2.7% of messages that we identified as spam. Learn how we’re working to maintain the safety and integrity of texting. Read more >
8. Executive team promotion and appointments
We’ve been fortunate to attract some exceptional talent to our executive team and this year is no exception. We promoted James Lapic to chief technology officer, appointed Nimrod Vered as senior vice president of engineering, Alison Billings as vice president of industry development (U.S.), Paul Wheeler as vice president of industry development (Canada) and Faye Ricci as general counsel.
9. Moved to spacious new headquarters in Seattle
After busting at the seams in our previous location in SODO across from T-Mobile Park, we moved to our beautiful new headquarters in the Elliott Bay Office Park in Lower Queen Anne. We now occupy over 75,000 square feet of remodeled office space, providing us with room to grow and some spectacular waterfront views. Read more >
10. Partnership with The Riveter for #WMNWORK
We partnered with The Riveter, a national network of female-led coworking spaces, on a joint mission to elevate women in their work by launching a career advice text line and #WMNWORK campaign to celebrate women in the workplace. Women and their supporters of all genders are encouraged to text 1-833-WMN-WORK (1-833-966-9675) with questions on how to expand and evolve their careers. Read more >
